Oh god, I LOVE curvy flares on an old ‘stang.
I just drove, according to the trip-B odometer, 1,810.0 miles from CO to MO and back. Nothing substantial, true, but among the 24 hours driving across impossibly green Kansas hills, the mind has time to think about all things. And then a black, with one wide white stripe over the top, 1966+ fastback Mustang zips by the other way. Gaping grill and all. Thoughts other than car thoughts got tossed out the window like an apple core.
I want car things. We all want things. Everyone’s gotta have a hobby. Our hobbies are to dream where we can’t have. Yet when we can have, the dream becomes, oh, complicated let’s say. I have a two-car garage. It is highly unlikely to move in the next 20-30 years into a house with a 4 car or larger garage and I have not the space to build a large workshop for all of the things that I will soon embark upon. Fun cars, track car(s), projects+, etc. Airplanes can creep in there too if I can ever justify operating a Commanche 250 or Fairchild F-24.
What I need is a separate workshop elsewhere not too far away. Where at my parent’s home a giant shop/former US Steel church building can be had for just over $400,000 ( I found it a mid-Missouri morning paper) That would just buy the land to build a building on, if not just half the land the way things are going in Boulder County Colorado, or anywhere in the Denver metro area frankly.
What’s a dreamer to do? At the minimum, I want to finish the Mini then hit a ‘66 Mustang-(aluminum headed i6) and a 240z and a Model-A sedan and anything else that strikes my fancy. The cost of that kind of living is only supported in most cow and breadbasket states.
What’s a dreamer to do when the dreams are a near reality, but the infrastructure is such an obstacle? What do the California guys do? I suppose I better lock down some land over the neighboring county line before things get completely out of control.

I live in a very urban part of a big city and I rent 1/2 of a small garage for my automotive endeavors. Its been 12 months since I’ve had it and I’ve come to terms with the fact that most of my dreams will have to stay dreams. My project wish list will never stop growing and at the end of the day, I have a busy life and limited time. I love working on my rover in that dirty-ass garage, nothing makes me happier. I can show up at 8:00 on a Saturday and work until 5:00 without even a thought. Time flies when I’m there, I’m in my element and I love it. The flip side is I realize that’s 9 hours I just spent on a Saturday when I could have been seeing friends, spending time with my girlfriend, or otherwise enjoying life. Its all a compromise and we only have some much time on this earth.
Once I can deem my Rover fully roadworthy and street-parkable, I’m ending my lease and selling some tools. This past year has taught me that time is more valuable than anything, and my passions can’t get in the way of my priorities.

You could be like me and rent a Public Storage unit to park a vehicle in. I don’t really want to sink $60k into a 2 car detached garage, when I probably won’t live here in 10 years.

10 x 10 is nearly $150/month here. When CU Boulder students spend $60k a year for school the storage places have no problem jacking up rates.

Ouch, that’s what I pay for my 10x20.

When I was between houses for 3 months I was paying close to $480/mo. for 3 units, 10x10, 10x15, 10x20. Basicly a 40' trailer worth of space.

Just move to MO/KS/NE/IA/etc. There’s places where land is cheaper, and some that already have existing barns/garages and a place to live as well. Nicer people, better weather, lower cost of living... What’s not to love?

The commute to work becomes quite far. Im locked in here for good. Well ser how things go in thenext few years. I just found an ‘autoclub’ about 15m away selling garage like storage condos for less than i would have thought. $130/sq.ft. shop space. Of course im always 2 years behind happenings and I’m sure the spaces will be bought up before i have my shot.
